Why I Jumped On The “Butter Coffee” Bandwagon

In June of 2016 my other half received a job offer he’d been dreaming of for years. I couldn’t have been happier for him. He’s a hardworking, good man that deserves to have everything that makes him happy. All the good stuff aside, he would be moving out of state. Not ideal. Granted it was only to Vegas, which is about a four hour drive from Southern California, so the distance wasn’t terrible but making that drive two or three times a month definitely meant a lot of car time for me.

I enjoy listening to music and chatting on the phone but when I’m in the car for a long period of time by myself I need something a bit more stimulating, so I started listening to podcasts. I’d tried a few series that were alright but I hadn’t found anything super exciting until a friend recommended, Bulletproof Radio. This podcast covers human performance with respect to mind, body and life. The first one I listened to was the episode featuring Vishen Lakhiani as he spoke about his book, “The Code of the Extraordinary Mind.” I WAS BLOWN AWAY. It was one of those serendipitous moments that happens at the perfect time… The conversation I was listening to was exactly what I needed to hear at that point in my life and I felt very inspired. I was now an avid Bulletproof Radio listener.

Instantly, I got on a serious health kick. Not that this was new. For the past eight years I’ve experimented with being pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, soy free and I’ve always been a yoga, dance, pilates and general fitness devotee… but this podcast was taking nutrition to another level, complimenting their opinions with modern science that put many traditional wellness methods to shame.

The Bulletproof Radio founder, Dave Asprey, is also the founder of Bulletproof Coffee. You may have heard of it… The butter coffee! Sounds weird, right?! This topic often came up during his interviews and left me wondering, “I wonder what the heck that butter coffee thing tastes like and is it really all that it’s hyped up to be?”

I’d been listening to Bulletproof Radio for a solid 6 weeks when I decided to try a new coffee shop in Vegas called, “Grouchy John’s.” I walked inside, started to check out the menu and BOOM! There it was… Right on top of the pastry bar stood a freestanding sign that read:

Bulletproof Coffee

(Coffee brewed with certified clean coffee beans, grass fed butter & brain octane oil)

Hot or Iced

$6.75

There it was! The thing!

Obviously, I had to get it. I’d been dying to see what all the fuss was about. So, friends, I ordered my first Bulletproof Coffee… And thus a new era was born… I was hooked. This special cup of joe was a refreshing, creamy, yummy cup of goodness that made me feel like a hundred bucks and after drinking it for about a month I dropped 6 pounds without even trying. I’ve never been a big person but 6 pounds on a 5”2 frame goes a long way. It was great!

WHY is it so magical?

Well…

#1 – The coffee beans

Bulletproof coffee is made with certified clean coffee beans meaning that they are free of mycotoxins (mold toxins). I didn’t even know this was a thing until I’d heard Dave (we’re on a first name basis, best friends!) talking about it on Bulletproof Radio. The level of contamination varies but basically the US sucks at regulating our food (surprise) so be wary of where your beans are coming from and how they’ve been harvested! Otherwise, mycotoxins can cause an array of problems. The biggest being the chronic inflammation it triggers in your body and that is no bueno mi amigo.

Oh, and one more clean coffee bean perk! Enjoying coffee made from mold free beans can help eliminate those not so fun side effects like jitters, headache, stomachache and the crash you feel not long after you’ve finished your morning java.

#2 – Grass Fed Butter

I’m gonna do my best to convince you that this is a good decision.

Remember the saying, “you are what you eat?” The same goes for cows! Cows that graze in a pasture eat grass. Cows that are factory-farm raised eat grain feed. So, the butter differs drastically between the two. Grass-fed butter is higher is ALL the good stuff: Omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, CLA, antioxidants and vitamins A, K, D and E. It also contains high levels of the anti-inflammatory fat, butyrate. Butyrate is a rockstar. It is a short chain fatty acid that helps decrease inflammation and that’s awesome because that helps protect against cancer, free radical damage, mental illness and it improves body composition, gut health and a slew of other things.

#3 – Brain octane oil

Brain octane oil belongs to a category of fat called medium chain triglycerides (MCT’s). It is a super powerful ingredient because it raises fat-burning and brain fueling molecules called ketones. We like that! It is also the most effective MCT that can be used to help curb your hunger, lose weight, recover faster and help your brain function more efficiently. Basically brain octane gives you super powers.

I am not a doctor. I am only speaking from personal experience. If you’re still skeptical, that’s good! No one should tell you what is good for your body. Through your own trial and error and personal research see what works best for you. Listen to your body. Make it a personal mission to feel and function the very best you can.

Ever since I was a child I’ve had dark purple circles under my eyes. I’ve tried creams, masks, cucumber slices, cold tea bags and made it a mission to get plenty of sleep but nothing could fix the little bruises that always made me look sleepy. I’d resigned to finding a solution. I attributed them to an inherited family trait. Then… magically… (I’m dramatic but I’m being totally serious right now) after drinking Bulletproof Coffee and switching up a few things in my diet (more fat) they have become FAR less noticeable. Are they completely gone? I wish, but the difference is drastic.

What I’m saying is, don’t forfeit the best you. Don’t abandon hope for those dark circles, tired days, dry skin, mood swings, extra nine pounds or whatever it is that you’re struggling with. Food is our friend. Food is medicine. Of all the things you have reasons to spend money on, invest in your body and your mind because it’s much harder to buy a new one when this one wears out! Plus, it just feels good to feel good.

Cheers to your morning cup of joe! With some butter 😉
